Example

A collection of 32 coins amounted to \$5.15. If it consists of dimes and quarters, how many quarters are there?

Solution

Let

$x$ = number of quarters (25 ¢ coins)

$32 - x$ = number of dimes (10 ¢ coins)

$x$ = number of quarters (25 ¢ coins)

$32 - x$ = number of dimes (10 ¢ coins)

$0.25x + 0.10(32 - x) = 5.15$

$0.15x = 1.95$

$x = 13$ → no. of 25 ¢ coins *answer*
